On October 2, 1980, the coaster MV Panagiotis ran aground on a limestone cove during a storm, settling into white sand beneath 200-metre vertical cliffs. The Greek Navy left the hull where it lay. Over four decades the wreck oxidized to rust-orange, and the bay became the most reproduced image of the Ionian islands.
Navagio — "shipwreck" in Greek — draws half a million visitors annually, though the beach itself has been closed to landings since a 2018 rockfall.
