The cove's unofficial name, Navagio, derives from the Greek word for shipwreck, and the site became a protected natural monument in 2018 after rockfalls from the 200-meter vertical cliffs prompted access restrictions.
Today, Navagio Beach private tour departures from Porto Vromi and Agios Nikolaos offer the sole legal approach to the shipwreck cove perimeter. Speedboat operators navigate the 12-kilometer route along Zakynthos' western escarpment, threading through sea caves carved by millennia of wave action. The Blue Caves network, five kilometers north of Navagio, comprises seven principal chambers where sunlight refracts through submerged limestone, tinting the water cobalt. Private charters permit swimmers to enter the caves during calm conditions, while shared boat tours maintain a viewing distance per maritime safety protocols enforced since 2021.
The clifftop observation platform above Navagio, reached by a 30-minute drive from Volimes village, reopened in March 2024 with reinforced barriers after partial collapse incidents in 2018 and 2022. The platform stands 260 meters above sea level and provides unobstructed sightlines to the shipwreck and the Ionian horizon.
